In recent months, the Grand Orient of Italy (GOI) has been at the center of a heated public debate, amplified by journalistic investigations that raise serious questions about transparency and legality within Italian Freemasonry. The failure to schedule the requested hearing in the Anti-Mafia Commission has fueled growing suspicions and concerns, highlighting the urgent need for clear and decisive institutional action.
Agenparl recently published investigations that shed light on the case of the Flos Mundi lodge, formally linked to the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta (SGLoM). This episode exemplifies the complexity and opacity surrounding Freemasonry in Italy, raising doubts about the regularity of operations associated with such lodges and their connections to questionable circles.
In addition, articles published in press organs such as Il Sole 24 Ore and The Maltese Herald have denounced the emergence of Maltese lodges as instruments for ambiguous operations involving both Italian and foreign representatives. These findings suggest the disturbing possibility of illegal activities infiltrating Freemasonry, an issue that cannot be overlooked from the standpoint of public safety.
The current position of the GOI, under the leadership of Grand Master Stefano Bisi, has not provided thorough clarifications or initiated concrete measures to facilitate the hearing before the Anti-Mafia Commission. This lack of transparency undermines the credibility of the entire Masonic obedience and fuels suspicions of an attempt to hide internal issues.
In this context, the possibility of placing the Grand Orient of Italy under external administration is becoming increasingly concrete. Such a measure could ensure a thorough investigation of its internal management and relations with unrecognized foreign lodges, addressing concerns such as the presence of individuals expelled from other obediences and the lack of control over affiliates.
It is critical that the Anti-Mafia Commission act without delay and schedule the hearing on the GOI and transnational lodges. Italian Freemasonry must operate in a framework of complete transparency, avoiding gray areas that could compromise its reputation and legitimacy.
Italy deserves clarity on these issues and citizens have the right to expect an answer from institutions. It is time to move beyond evasive statements and take decisive steps to restore trust in the Masonic system, while ensuring respect for the law and historical traditions.
