Disruptions on CUT Bloemfontein Campus
It has come to the attention of CUT management that this morning, 3 February 2025, there were some barricades in front of the entrance gates at the Bloemfontein Campus, set up in relation to students who still have unresolved issues. CUT understands that some students still need to resolve registration challenges, and the university has reiterated that they remain committed to providing all the support needed. These issues affect some students at the Welkom Campus as well and they are currently being addressed.
NSFAS
During the visit of the Deputy Minister Dr. Mimmy Gondwe with her delegation, at the Welkom Campus on Friday, 31 January 2025, NSFAS challenges were discussed and these started receiving attention on the spot. As of today, the NSFAS team is at the Bloemfontein Campus, to resolve any NSFAS-related challenges, including concerns about student accommodation. Management is appealing to affected students across both campuses to take advantage of this opportunity while NSFAS officials are around.
The institution appreciates that several students have challenges they still need to address and remains committed to ensuring that students are supported accordingly. A Memorandum of Demands was received this morning, and the university will work closely with the SRC to resolve these.
Academic Project
Regarding the academic project, classes are running as scheduled, and registration for senior students continues as planned. Registration of First-entering students has been concluded, except for some international students. Faculties are providing the necessary support to help with any backlogs. As of Friday, January 31, 2025, the university has achieved an overall registration rate of over 84%. First-year registrations have exceeded our expectations at 101.73%!
Management acknowledges the staff members and students who have been patient with the situation and supporting academic processes up to this point. CUT remains committed to working together with a shared goal of a successful academic year and is dedicated to making this year a positive and enriching experience for all students and staff.
