DHET Deputy Minister, Dr. Mimmy Gondwe encourages teamwork, during oversight and monitoring visit
Funding, accommodation, and registration issues are among the top challenges that higher education students face at the beginning of an academic year. To help mitigate this process, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, visited the Central University of Technology (CUT) Welkom Campus on 31 January 2025 to evaluate the state of readiness of higher education institutions ahead of the 2025 academic year.
Accompanied by key senior officials from the Department of Higher Education and Training and the National Student Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS), a government entity that provides financial aid to students, Dr. Gondwe encouraged all relevant stakeholders to work in unison to ensure a smooth start to the 2025 academic year.
“Work together, this cannot be done by the department alone. You know what the issues on the ground are. And let me tell you, the high-level issues will not matter if you have not resolved them. We must work together, we may not agree or see eye to eye, but we listen to what our people want, and we are moving forward together,” Dr. Gondwe emphasised.
The University management, student representative council, Institutional Forum, and NSFAS representatives presented their state of readiness reports for the 2025 academic year. They engaged in a productive discussion, seeking solutions to unresolved matters such as approved student accommodation.
CUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Pamela Dube, assured the deputy minister that the University is committed to ensuring that students receive an academic education and contribute positively to society. ‘Being an entrepreneurial university is very important for us. Our Entrepreneurial Education Ecosystem is very important. We are working towards ensuring that while we want our students to live with the graduate attributes we espouse, entrepreneurship is part of it. That every graduate student is an entrepreneurial student, and there are different efforts to address that, both in the curriculum and co-curriculum space,” added Prof. Dube.
The visit was part of the Department of Higher Education and Training oversight and monitoring taking place across the country.
