In light of recent journalistic investigations and the growing controversy surrounding the Grand Orient of Italy (GOI), an urgent and decisive institutional action is now required. The failure to schedule a hearing in the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, despite being requested for some time, continues to raise suspicions and questions regarding the actual transparency of Italy’s primary Masonic obedience.
In recent months, numerous articles from national and international media have raised doubts about the functioning of Freemasonry in Italy and its links to opaque environments, making institutional intervention indispensable. Agenparl, through a series of investigations, has highlighted how the issue of the Flos Mundi lodge, formally belonging to the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Malta (SGLoM) but operating on Italian soil, is raising concerns of both Masonic and legal nature. The letter sent to the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) requesting clarifications has yet to receive satisfactory responses, further fueling doubts about the legitimacy of certain operations.
The Flos Mundi case is not the only cause for concern. Investigations published by Il Sole 24 Ore and The Maltese Herald have revealed an alarming scenario, with Maltese lodges allegedly being used as instruments for dubious operations involving both Italian and foreign individuals. The association between Freemasonry and illicit activities represents a public order issue that can no longer be ignored.
The need for the Commissioners’ oversight of the GOI
Given these elements, the hypothesis of placing the Grand Orient of Italy under commissioners’ oversight is becoming increasingly concrete. The current leadership, represented by Grand Master Stefano Bisi, has yet to provide exhaustive explanations regarding the issues raised and has not taken any initiatives to facilitate a public hearing before the Anti-Mafia Commission. This prolonged silence undermines the credibility of regular Italian Freemasonry and fuels suspicions that certain aspects are being deliberately concealed.
Placing the GOI under commissioners’ oversight could be a solution to ensure transparency and legality, allowing for a thorough investigation into its internal management and connections with unrecognized foreign lodges. The possible infiltration of individuals expelled from other obediences, unclear membership management, and lack of adequate controls over affiliates are all elements that fully justify an extraordinary intervention by the competent authorities.
A call to Institutions for immediate action
Given the findings so far, it is crucial for the Anti-Mafia Commission to proceed without further delays in scheduling the hearing on the Grand Orient of Italy and the activities of transnational lodges. Italian Freemasonry cannot afford gray areas, and the right to transparency must not be hindered by silence or postponements.
The time for evasive statements is over: a decisive institutional intervention is needed to restore trust and ensure that Freemasonry operates in full compliance with the law and its historical traditions. Italy deserves clarity on these matters, and the public demands concrete answers.
