CUT Radiography students empower communities through health education
Third-year Radiography students at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) have taken the initiative to improve community health through a community-based service-learning (CBSL) project. The project, titled: “We Care About Your Well-being,” is focused on public health education, particularly on the dangers of smoking and the importance of infection prevention and control.
The students partnered with local primary and secondary schools to conduct informative sessions on the harmful effects of smoking, including lung cancer, COPD, and oral health issues. Practical demonstrations, such as using cotton wool to illustrate the impact of smoke on the lungs, were used to engage the learners. Additionally, the students created visual aids, such as lung models, to aid in understanding the complexities of respiratory health.
Recognising the importance of clean water access, the students took steps to improve the water infrastructure at one of the schools. By installing new taps and upgrading existing ones, they ensured that learners have access to clean drinking water.
To address the issue of substance abuse, the students renovated a room at Sand du Plessis Secondary School to create a dedicated counselling space. This initiative aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for learners who may be struggling with addiction. The success of this project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including CUT staff, students, and external organisations. The Dental Assistant program, CUT Clinic, CUT Wellness Centre, CUT FabLab, and the National Council Against Smoking provided invaluable support and expertise.
