TERNA: DAYLIGHT-SAVING TIME WILL SAVE AROUND €90
MILLION FOR THE NATIONAL ELECTRICITY SYSTEM
Lower consumption by 370 million kWh and 170 thousand tonnes of CO2 not emitted into the
atmosphere
From 2004 to 2023 around €2.2 billion and 11.7 billion kWh of electricity have been saved in Italy
Rome, 29 March 2024 – According to estimates by Terna, the national power grid operator, in the
seven months of daylight-saving time, Italy will save around €90 million, thanks to a lower
consumption of electricity equal to about 370 million kWh which will also generate a significant
environmental benefit, quantifiable in the reduction of about 170 thousand tons of carbon dioxide
emissions into the atmosphere.
Daylight-saving time will be effective from Sunday, 31 March when clocks will be set forward by 60
minutes at 2:00 a.m. and will end on 27 October, with the return to wintertime.
The financial savings estimated for the period of daylight-saving time in 2024 has been calculated
considering that the average cost of electricity per kWh for the typical domestic user in the
protected market (according to data from ARERA) is currently around 24.3 euro cents before tax.
The approximately 370 million kWh of lower electricity consumption is equivalent to the average
annual requirement of over 150,000 households.
From 2004 until 2023, according to analysis by the company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, the
lower consumption of electricity in Italy due to daylight-saving time was overall around 11.7 billion
kWh and has brought about, in financial terms, savings of around €2.2 billion for its citizens.
Real-time data on the operation of the national electricity system can also be found on the Terna
app, available on all app stores:
