They can also cause sewer backups, which can flow into storm drains and local waterways, causing environmental and health problems.

Highlights from City ‘community action grants’
The River City Waterway Alliance recently received a City “community action grant,” which are used by community organizations to prevent stormwater pollution.The grant helped fund a summer project that hosted 20 clean-up events where more than 88,000 pounds of trash were collected.Their project significantly contributed to a cleaner Sacramento.Staff from the City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership are also reminding people that free kits are available to help residents do local clean-ups.

Staff feature – Piper Gilbertson
Piper Gilbertson is an information technology trainee and provides technology support for many Department of Utilities staff.Gilbertson coordinates and prepares devices for City staff, installs software and troubleshoots technology-related problems.She says that she loves learning everything there is to know about her line of work but she also enjoys focusing on problem resolution.
Outside of work, Gilbertson enjoys hiking and running, and she is an ardent foodie.She also loves spending nights at home watching her favorite shows with her cat and family.
