FAO to host AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform
Inaugural Plenary Assembly to be held on 15-16 November 2023
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will host the Inaugural Plenary Assembly of the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform on 15-16 November at its headquarters in Rome.
Antimicrobials play a crucial role in preventing and treating infections and diseases in humans, animals and plants, but their overuse and misuse is the main driver of AMR. Globally, an estimated 5 million human deaths per year are associated with AMR, of which 1.3 million are attributable to bacterial AMR infections.
The two-day event takes place ahead of 2023 World AMR Awareness Week and will allow members of the AMR Partnership Platform to come together to engage, interact and work with one another to propose, discuss, and build joint actions against AMR.
The gathering is seen as instrumental in building and promoting a shared global vision on AMR and catalysing a global collective engagement ahead of the UN General Assembly High-Level meeting on AMR due in 2024.
Established by the FAO, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the Platform is an inclusive, international, and multi-stakeholder forum, which brings together relevant stakeholders across the human, animal, plant, and environment sectors to assist in preserving antimicrobials as lifesaving medicines for humans, animals, plants and ecosystems and ensuring their responsible use under a One Health approach.
The following speakers will address the high-level opening session:
* QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
* Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (video message)
* Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General (video message)
* Monique Eloit, WOAH Director General (video message)
Interpretation will be provided in all UN languages.
