?zmir electric-vehicle app wins Mediterranean award The Turkish city of ?zmir and a business that is easing the transition to electric vehicles have been named as winners of an award that recognises successful collaboration between young entrepreneurs and local authorities in the Mediterranean region. O?uzhan Sarita?, the 28-year-old founder of Car4Future, and ?zmir Metropolitan Municipality were presented with the [ARLEM Award: Young local entrepreneurship in the Mediterranean ] on 24 October by the co-chairs of the
[Union for the Mediterranean ] ; the
[European Training Foundation ] ; the
[Inter-Mediterranean Commission of Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions ] ;
[Eurochambres ] ; and
[Anima Invest ] . The evaluation committee was chaired by the
[European Committee of the Regions ], which serves as the secretariat of ARLEM. The winner of the award in 2022 was Manar Ramadan of [Banlastic Egypt ], a company in Alexandria, Egypt, that offers alternatives to single-use plastic bags and provides green services. Previous winners are Erilda Krasi of
[1001 Albanian Adventures ], a tour operator based in the city of Berat, Albania; a fashion business for women –
[Zimni Jadeed ] – based in Tripoli, Libya; and a date-processing business –

The European Committee of the Regions
The European Committee of the Regions is the EU’s assembly of regional and local representatives from all 27 Member States. Created in 1994 following the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, its mission is to involve regional and local authorities in the EU’s decision-making process and to inform them about EU policies. The European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission consult the Committee in policy areas affecting regions and cities. To sit on the European Committee of the Regions, all of its 329 members and 329 alternates must either hold an electoral mandate or be politically accountable to an elected assembly in their home regions and cities.
