*HSE’s latest construction health inspection campaign focuses on moving and handling materials. *There are a range of free resources which support the campaign to help you manage the risks on site*. *
The campaign is raising awareness of health issues in relation to moving and handling materials to improve the long-term health of those working in construction.
When on site, HSE inspectors are checking that employers and workers:
* know the risks
* plan their work to eliminate or substitute the risks, where possible
* where that is not possible, use sensible control measures to protect workers from aches, pain and discomfort in joints, muscles and bones known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) [ https://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/index.htm?utm_source=govdelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=construction-manhan-23&utm_term=manhan-1&utm_content=digest-5-oct-23 ].

Company fined more than £1.2m after man crushed to death [ https://press.hse.gov.uk/2023/09/27/company-fined-1-275m-after-man-crushed-to-death/?utm_source=govdelivery&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=press-channels-push&utm_term=crush-1m-fine-headline&utm_content=digest-5-oct-23 ]
The fine followed an incident where a worker was crushed to death during maintenance work at a quarry.
The worker was part of a maintenance team that was repairing a feed hopper. He had been standing on a conveyor that was located under the feed hopper before the repair work started.
The conveyor was then inadvertently switched on, trapping and fatally crushing the 26-year-old worker.
HSE’s investigation found that the haulage company had failed to ensure the feed hopper was properly isolated before the repair work commenced.
