September 2023
Welcome to 115 Broadway!
On September 14th, The New York Academy of Sciences welcomed our local scientific community to our new location at Trinity Centre in the Financial District of Manhattan.
Invited guests toured our space, completed STEM activities, and sat in on an exciting panel discussion moderated by Academy President and CEO, Nicholas B. Dirks.
Are you interested in watching the scientific panel? You can access the event recording in our recent article (https://www.nyas.org/news-articles/academy-news/the-new-york-academy-of-sciences-hosts-open-house-to-inaugurate-its-new-headquarters/?mc_cid=399a12f34e&mc_eid=UNIQID) covering the event.
In welcoming our new space, we say goodbye to the old. In 2006, The Academy moved into 7 World Trade Center as one of its first tenants (seen here as a watercolor illustration (https://www.nyas.org/history-highlights/contents/editorial/a-visual-history-of-the-academys-homes/?mc_cid=399a12f34e&mc_eid=UNIQID#6) ). We have hosted hundreds of scientific convenings throughout the years at this beautiful location and look forward to growing that list at 115 Broadway.

Lost in Translation: The Underrecognized Challenges of Non-Native Postdocs in the English Scientific Wonderland (https://www.nyas.org/news-articles/academy-news/lost-in-translation-the-underrecognized-challenges-of-non-native-postdocs-in-the-english-scientific-wonderland/?mc_cid=399a12f34e&mc_eid=UNIQID)
Scientific communication has transcended borders, yet scientists often encounter significant language barriers. English, hailed as the universal standard language of science, grants a significant advantage to native speakers. For non-native scientists, bridging this gap requires extensive preparation, and this journey can be isolating and anxiety-inducing, particularly for early-career postdoctoral researchers.

Supporting International Postdocs: “How can we make this place more like home?” (https://www.nyas.org/news-articles/academy-news/supporting-international-postdocs-how-can-we-make-this-place-more-like-home/?mc_cid=399a12f34e&mc_eid=UNIQID)
International postdocs leave behind all of their support systems – family, friends, culture – in their home country and are often expected to adjust and start working right away. In reality, the support international scientists need is not unusual. Instead, it is something we do not realize we missed or needed until it is gone.

For Sebsa, a 14-year-old student living in Amman, Jordan, it all began with an ad on social media via the Royal Health Awareness Society, urging teens interested in science and innovation to apply for the Junior Academy Challenge. Sebsa’s curiosity was triggered, but she hesitated at first. Few of her schoolmates shared her passion for science and she had never embarked on a virtual collaborative project.

The New York Academy of Sciences inaugurated its new headquarters in Manhattan’s Financial District on September 14 with an Open House that hosted almost 200 scientists and science enthusiasts on the eighth floor of the U.S. Realty Building, a neo-Gothic skyscraper erected in 1907. The Academy moved into the landmark building at 115 Broadway last May.
