Animals: Art, Science and Sound
Open until 28 August 2023 | Members go free

A race around our exhibition
The King’s elephant
In 1255, Louis IV gave Henry III an African elephant. Not only is this study unusual because it was drawn from sight rather than a written description (the usual for Medieval manuscripts), but also because the mammal is depicted with knee joints, when people previously believed elephants not to have them at all.
Endangered amphibians
Amphibians are among the planet’s most threatened animals. This artist’s book features various frog species, with nine classified as critically endangered due to disease and habitat loss. Remarkably, some of these endangered species have just been newly discovered.
Darwin’s insect collection
This shield bug is almost 200 years old. Collected by Charles Darwin in Western Australia, it is now held in a collection by the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and preserved in Levon Biss’ photography.
