On Thursday, MEPs will welcome UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk for a debate on the global state of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Mr Türk’s visit to the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Civil Liberties Committee comes just after [the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration](https://www.ohchr.org/en/stories/2023/06/vienna-30-looks-future-human-rights) celebrated in June, a landmark document which established the office of the [High Commissioner for Human Rights](https://www.ohchr.org/en/about-us/high-commissioner), and ahead of [the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights](https://www.ohchr.org/en/get-involved/campaign/udhr-75) in December. The latter will also be the main focus of a European Parliament high-level conference in Brussels on 29 November 2023.
The speech by the High Commissioner, during his first visit to the European Parliament since his appointment in October 2022, also follows a recent visit by MEPs on the [Subcommittee on Human Rights](https://www.europarl.europa.eu/committees/en/droi/home/highlights) to Geneva, Switzerland, where they discussed the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide with UN officials and other stakeholders, including with Mr Türk.
WHEN: Thursday 20 July at 11.00 CEST.
WHERE: Room 4Q1 in the European Parliament’s ANTALL building in Brussels.
