On April 15, 2023, Stanford University’s honorary organization for alumni volunteer service, Stanford Associates, honored six SLS alumni with various awards for their volunteer work on behalf of the university. The Gold Spike Award, the group’s highest annual award, which recognizes decades of exceptional and significant service to the university, went to Vaughn Williams, JD ’69, a retired partner of law firm Skadden, Arps. The Stanford Associates Awards web page called Williams “one of Stanford’s most esteemed and respected citizens, working diligently and often quietly as an adviser, connector, and facilitator over more than 50 years. His impact extends across campus, from Stanford Law School to Stanford Arts, to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and beyond.”
Stanford Medals, which “annually honor volunteer leaders with decades of distinguished volunteer service to the university,” went to Leslie T. Hatamiya, JD ’97 (BA ’90), and Danny Parker, JD/MBA ’83. Hatamiya was recognized for her work “serving on the Board of Trustees, its Task Force on Minority Alumni Relations, the SAA Board of Directors, the Law School Board of Visitors, Stanford Associates Board of Governors, as well as chairing the Haas Center’s National Advisory Board and leading numerous reunion committees.” Parker was called a “one-of-a-kind Stanford ambassador” and “renowned leader” who is a “past president of the Stanford National Black Alumni Association and the Stanford Black Alumni Association of Southern California.”
The Governors’ Award, which honors “exemplary and long-standing volunteer service to the university,” went to three law school alumni: Susan Cromwell Adamson, JD ’82 (BA ’78); Marisa Brutoco, JD ’04 (BA ’00); and Phil Jelley, JD ’56 (BA ’54), who passed away just prior to the award ceremony, on April 5, 2023. Jelley’s wife, Patty, accepted the award on his behalf.
