In the November 2022 election, Democrat Janice Weiner won a seat in the Iowa State Senate. Previously, Weiner served as an at-large member of the Iowa City Council and prior to that spent 26 years as a U.S. diplomat. She joined the U.S. State Department in 1987 and was posted to East Berlin, serving there before and after the Berlin Wall fell. She also served in Belgium and then Turkey, where she won awards as an embassy human rights officer. Subsequent posts included Warsaw, Poland; Toronto, Canada; Mexico City, Mexico; and Düsseldorf, Germany, as consul general. Her final posting was in Washington, D.C., where she liaised with Capitol Hill. Afterwards, Weiner worked for the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), the foreign service bargaining unit and professional association.
