(AGENPARL) – VENEZIA lun 29 maggio 2023 Russian, Polish, and Bulgarian, taken as representatives of the three subgroups of Slavic languages (Eastern, Western, and Southern respectively), share the use of the numeral ‘one’ as a means to express indefiniteness (despite their individual differences). The talk is going to show the complexity of expression of indefiniteness in Slavic, focusing on the use of ‘one’ in these three languages. The aim of the present work is to address a couple of issues related to this item: (i) the syntactic path of grammaticalization that leads ‘one’ form being a numeral to becoming an indefinite marker, and (ii) the debated semantic import of this element when used as an indefinite marker.

Luca Molinari is a PhD student in Language Sciences at the University of Warsaw in cotutelle with Ca’ Foscari University of Venezia. His current interest regards the expression of indefiniteness in the Slavic languages. He has published work on the expression of indefiniteness in the dialect of Piacenza in a comparative perspective with other Italo-Romance varieties and regional Italian. He is part of the VariOpInTA project (Variazione e Opzionalità in Italo-Romanzo).
