Jack B. Owens, a leader in corporate law and California horse racing, passed away at the age of 78 on November 21, 2022 in Modesto, California.
Born in Orange, California, Jack excelled in academics and sports at Placer High School. He attended Stanford University for college, where he played football and ran track. He graduated second in his class from Stanford Law School, and served as a law clerk to Justice Powell at the Supreme Court of the United States. He also served two years in the United States Air Force. After teaching at UC Berkeley Law school, he became a partner at the law firm Orrick Herrington. While at Orrick, he helped draft the briefs for the UC Regents in the groundbreaking case UC Regents v Bakke, which concerned diversity in college admissions. After arguing before the Supreme Court, Jack went on to serve as the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Gallo Winery for more than 25 years.
Jack was also deeply involved in the California thoroughbred horse racing industry. In addition to raising and owning horses, he served in a variety of roles for the Thoroughbred Owners of California, including as its Chairman for six years. Jack was an incredibly loving father and husband who dedicated his life to supporting those around him. He loved to travel – especially to Hawaii – and bring his family to shared experiences like skiing and fishing. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, his drive, his sense of humor, and his warm and welcoming nature. He will be deeply missed.
Jack is survived by his wife Barbara, children John, David, James and Alexandra, grandchildren Jaclyn, Audrey, Murphy and Riley, and his brother Thomas.
He was passionate about giving back to his community and contributed regularly to the Gospel Mission, The Special Olympics, and ASPCA.
