(AGENPARL) – METRO MANILA gio 13 aprile 2023 NUKU’ALOFA, TONGA (13 April 2023) — Growth in the South Pacific economy of Tonga is projected to reach 2.5% in 2023 expanding further to 3.2% in 2024, according to a new economic report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
“Like its South Pacific neighbors, Tonga has faced an immensely difficult past 3 years, not just because of the global pandemic but also from the impact of hurricanes and last year’s tsunami,” said ADB Public Sector Economist James Webb. “Tonga’s positive growth outlook is being aided by the stimulus provided by public expenditure, but the country’s fiscal position will be mixed into the medium term.”
The Asian Development Outlook (ADO) April 2023, the latest edition of ADB’s flagship economic report, notes eased mobility restrictions and revived public investment will likely drive gross domestic product growth this year and next. Tourism accommodation capacity lost to the eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai volcano and subsequent tsunami in 2022 will limit the ability of tourism to contribute to a stronger economic recovery.
Inflation is forecast to accelerate to 9.4% in FY2023, with remittances providing some potential relief to households. Inflation is projected to drop sharply to 1.5% in FY2024.
ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49 from the region.
