“Engaging students in projects, team works and online collaboration: Japanese Language and Culture Education in Pula”

Abstract:
In this presentation, we will provide a brief overview of the Japanese language and culture education at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula since its establishment in 2015 focusing on the activities in which our students are directly engaged in projects and team works as well as in online collaboration with partner universities in Japan. After presenting main characteristics of the undergraduate and graduate Japanese studies programs at the university, the first and only accredited study program of that kind in the country, we will present the following activities: 1) the three-year project From student practice to early career development supported by European Social Funds covering various aspects of career development such as lectures on job paths and careers, webinars, simulated travel tours with Japanese speaking guides, attending conferences, visiting schools and institutions etc., 2) e-lexicographic research and practical work on online bilingual Japanese-Croatian dictionary with students as active collaborators based on Bootcat, GDEX and other novel technologies, 3) virtual joint seminars with students and teachers in Japan within COIL (Collaborative International Online Learning) environment addressing various objectives and themes, such as students’ team research work at the partner and home universities, training Japanese teachers through creating Japanese language materials for foreign learners, surveys and tasks on career planning and guidance of learners of Japanese as a foreign language.
