TUESDAY MARCH 28- WEDNESDAY APRIL 5
Steps Plus: Hofstra Fitness and Health Challenge April 2023
The week starts off with a steps challenge, sponsored by the Exercise is Medicine pre-professional club and Future Healthcare Leaders (a combined undergraduate Exercise Physiology club and graduate Health Administration club). Teams of 2-5 students, faculty, and/or staff compete for gift prizes for the most steps accumulated. Learn more and sign up here.
SUNDAY APRIL 2
Society of Public Health Advocates (SOPHA) 5K – 10am, Hofstra Fitness Center
This 5k fun run/walk is a great way to get steps in. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Hofstra Fitness Center, and participants need to provide a non-perishable item for the Hofstra Food Pantry to enter. Register here.
MONDAY APRIL 3
Life Saving Skills: CPR/AED/Narcan Certification – 1-2:25pm, DOME 109
This workshop will teach how to recognize an emergency and apply the appropriate response – perform CPR, apply an AED (defibrillator), or administer Narcan. Participants will receive certifications and be provided with a Narcan training kit. Open to Hofstra students, faculty, and staff only. RSVP here – limited space.
Preventing Health Worker Burnout – 4:30-6:20pm, Cultural Center Theater
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, burnout was a significant concern among health care workers with the Surgeon General reporting approximately half of nurses and 20% of physicians plan to leave their profession as a result. This presentation explores the root causes of health care worker burnout and strategies to address their well-being. RSVP here.

Walk through the Mack Student Center and find multiple tables with fun and innovative activities promoting healthier lives and overall well-being. Topics include mental health, fitness, healthy eating, and even guide dog awareness.
Aging Café: Being Proactive at all Ages – 4:30-6:20pm, Student Center Multipurpose Room
Expand your understanding about aging in a positive, supportive environment – with interactive activities in a table station format. A dessert buffet will be available. RSVP here.
Keynote Event – Immigrant, Refugee, and Migrant Health: Centering Culture in Public Health Response – 6:30-8:20pm, Student Center Theater
The theme of National Public Health Week 2023 is “Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health,” and this keynote event will bring together community leaders and public health experts to discuss how they engage with immigrant, refugee, and migrant communities using a culturally centered approach. Note: In recognition for those who celebrate Ramadan, there will be a pause from 7:20–7:45 p.m. for light refreshments. A private space for prayer will also be available.

Lunchtime Fitness Walk – 12-1pm, Clock in front of CV Starr hall
Join us for a brisk 1.5-mile walk around Hofstra’s South Campus.
9th Annual Student Film Competition – 1-2:25pm, Student Center Theater
Teams of students will compete for best short video, addressing topics related to the National Public Health Week theme: Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health. A professional panel of judges will award prizes to the winning videos. RSVP here.

The Empowerment of Having a Lab of One’s Own: Research on Cholera, Climate, and Human Health with Dr. Rita Colwell – 1-2:25pm, Cultural Center Theater
Dr. Rita Colwell has tracked the disease of cholera and developed ways to stop the massive outbreaks it causes. Learn how the models developed to predict outbreaks of cholera work and how they have been modified to predict COVID-19. Policing and Mental Health: Advocating for Change- 6:30-9pm, Student Center Theater
Join us for a screening of the dramatic true crime film, The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain. Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr. was an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder, who was killed during a conflict with Westchester police officers who were dispatched for a safety check.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion on the future of policing and mental health featuring Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr. This event is co-sponsored by the Long Island Advocates for Police Accountability & the Sociology Department at Hofstra University. RSVP here.

Future Proofing Your Life (Ergonomics Demo) – 1-2:25pm, Student Center Multipurpose Room
Defined as the science of fitting a workplace to the user’s needs, ergonomics aims to increase efficiency and productivity and reduce discomfort. In this session, attendees will be provided posture screening, backpack awareness, ergonomic computer setup, plus upper extremity stretching and strengthening exercises with accompanying information handouts. The Brett Lake Speaker Series: Current Trends in Mental Health – 4:30-6:20, Student Center Multipurpose Room
Join a comprehensive discussion on suicide prevention and interventions for bereaved survivors, community members, caregivers, and health care providers, led by Dr. Jeff Thompson, an Adjunct Associate Research Scientist in the Psychiatry Department at Columbia University Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute. He will also discuss raising awareness, and how to enhance resilience through evidence-based practices. RSVP here.

Join the discussion regarding the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in audiology, such as acupuncture, acupressure, traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Korean medicine, Ayurveda, homeopathy, non-prescription drugs, herbs, and supplements. This student-led debate will explore the challenge audiologists face of conveying sensitive yet evidence-based information to their patients. RSVP here.
