Three days of voting in French-language school board by-elections for trustees begins January 21
Voting for the French language public school trustee, Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre) and French language Catholic school trustee, Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est), begins Saturday, January 21, and will run for three consecutive days.
Advance voting will take place on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Election day is Monday, January 23, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. During this time, eligible voters can vote at any one of the seven available voting places: http://www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/by-election/by-election-voting-places/
Eligible voters are encouraged to use MyVote (www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/by-election/by-election-voter-information/) to:
• Learn where and when to vote
• Check if they are on the voters’ list
• Download or print their Voter Information Card (if they are on the voters’ list)
• Check the candidates running in their ward
• View a sample of their ballot
If an eligible voter for this by-election is not on the voters’ list, they can add themselves:
• By showing qualifying identification when they go to vote in-person during advance vote or on election day
• By calling 416-338-1111, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., by January 22
Who can vote
To be eligible to vote for Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre) or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est), voters must be:
• a Canadian citizen; and
• at least 18 years old; and
• a resident in Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre) or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est) wards; or
• a non-resident, but you or your spouse own or rent residential property in Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre) or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est) wards; and
• not prohibited from voting under any law.
Voters may only vote once in the by-election regardless of how many properties they own or rent within Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre) or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est).
Eligibility to vote for a French-Language School Board
To vote for Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre), a voter must meet both of the following requirements:
• Be a French-language rights holder; and
• Be a French-language public school board supporter or have a spouse who is a French-language public school board supporter.
To vote for Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est), a voter must meet all of the following requirements:
• Be a Roman Catholic; and
• Be a French-language rights holder; and
Be a French-language separate school board supporter or have a spouse who is a French-language separate school board supporter.
Who cannot vote
Voters who voted for an English-Public or English-Catholic school board trustee during the 2022 Toronto Municipal Election are not eligible to vote in this by-election. Voters will not be able to make changes to their school support for the by-election.
A French-language rights holder is defined in the Education Act and refers to the right of citizens whose first language is French to receive educational instruction in French: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90e02.

Voter identification
Voter Information Cards provide information about when and where to vote and will lead to a more efficient voting experience, but they cannot be used as identification. Voters are reminded to have one piece of identification with their name and qualifying Conseil scolaire Viamonde (Ward 3 – Centre) or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (Ward 4 – Toronto Est) address and their Voter Information Card when they go to vote.
