New Issue Brief: Facebook in Latin America
For many people in Latin America, Facebook is the internet. The massive company has used free services, including Facebook Zero and Free Basics– to expand its power all over the globe. This influence often goes unchecked and unnoticed.
The free services raise several criticisms and questions. Should local governments regulate the platforms, and if so, do they have the technical expertise and desire to do so? How do we prevent regulation in service of authoritarian ends? Is it harmful to society for Facebook to have an effective monopoly on the internet and communications in the Global South?
In the first of a series of briefs examining the effects of technology companies on the world, our tech expertsexamine Facebook’s free services and the potential impacts in Latin America.
