Polio in London: Unpatented vaccine helped eradicate polio in the first place, campaigners say
Responding to news that polio vaccines will be offered to children in London, Mohga Kamal-Yanni, policy co-lead for the People’s Vaccine Alliance, said:
“One of the reasons we eradicated polio in the first place is because the original polio vaccine was not patented. When asked who owns the patent on the polio vaccine, the inventor Jonas Salk replied “Well, the people, I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”
“Locking lifesaving vaccines and treatments behind intellectual property rules threatens our ability to stamp out diseases. We saw it with HIV/AIDS treatments. We saw it with COVID-19 vaccines; we are seeing it with COVID-19 treatments. And we are seeing it again with Monkeypox. After more than sxty years, we need to finally listen to Jonas Salk and treat these tools as the people’s vaccines.”
