Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar
Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America
Human Rights Council – 50th Session
As Delivered by Ambassador Taylor
Thank you, Mr. President.
The United States strongly supports the mandate of the Special Rapporteur, we commend you, Mr. Andrews, for continuing to draw attention to the worsening human rights and humanitarian crises perpetrated by the military junta against the people of Myanmar.
We are deeply troubled by the military’s escalation of violence and ongoing reports of human rights violations and abuses, including extra-judicial killings, forced disappearances, gender-based violence, and torture. We call on the regime to discontinue attacks on all persons, including humanitarian workers, and to cease blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid to vulnerable communities and others displaced by the regime’s ongoing violence.
Mr. Andrews, we support your call for coordinated action to implement an international arms embargo and targeted economic action to identify and freeze the assets of the military and its affiliates.
We remain steadfast in our support for those working to chart a path to an inclusive democracy in Myanmar and call on the international community to join us in supporting these efforts.
Mr. Andrews, how can the international community most effectively coordinate pressure on the Myanmar military?
I thank you.
