Dr. Terri Fried, whose research centers on decision making for older persons with advanced illness and with multiple conditions, was recently appointed the Humana Foundation Professor of Geriatrics, effective immediately.
Fried received her M.D. in 1988 from Harvard Medical School and completed a general internal medicine internship and residency at Rhode Island Hospital. After completing fellowship training in geriatrics, ethics, and clinical effectiveness at Harvard, she spent two years as an assistant professor of medicine at what is now Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University before joining the Yale faculty as an assistant professor of medicine (geriatrics) in 1995.
Fried was promoted to professor in 2008 and, last June, was named section chief for Geriatric Medicine. She also serves as an attending physician at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Connecticut Healthcare System and co-leads the Yale Pepper Older Americans Independence Center.
The long–term goal of her research is to improve treatment decision-making for older persons. Fried seeks to enhance the frequency and quality of shared decision–making in order to provide patients with care that best meets their treatment preferences. In order to achieve this goal, her research has focused on expanding the treatment choices available to older persons for their care, eliciting their preferences for these different options, and identifying barriers to honoring patients’ preferences.
A renowned educator and practician, she has received numerous honors, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs VISN 1 Geriatric and Extended Care Service Line Award and the American Geriatrics Society’s awards for Outstanding Excellence in Geriatrics Research and Outstanding Scientific Achievement for Clinical Investigation.
