Two students in the Masters of Health Administration (MHA) program in the School of Health Professions and Human Services were awarded scholarships at the annual Healthcare Leaders of New York gala last week.
Constance Torre ’22 received the Leonard Achan Sr. Health Equity Scholarship, given to graduate students with diverse backgrounds that are committed to the betterment of the healthcare ecosystem.
A nurse by trade, Torre chose to continue her education with the hope of becoming a chief nursing officer or director of nursing, so she could create positive working environments for the nurses.
Set to graduate in December, Torre said her capstone project research provided valuable practical insights into health care leadership. She cited the guidance of Professor Fred Sganga, her capstone advisor.
“He is a really down to earth professor who has been in a lot of different positions at a lot of different places,” said Torre. “He is giving us real-world advice for when we get out there in terms of dealing with other administrators and directors at hospitals and getting our resumes together. He is really preparing us to go out there and get a job once we graduate.”
Grace Kwan-Mangal ’25, received the Achievement Award of Distinction Scholarship, given to graduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence, community service, and a desire to become future healthcare leaders.
Kwan-Mangal is a hospital pharmacist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was inspired to shift her career focus to healthcare administration after witnessing the trouble that many individuals had accessing high quality medical care.
“There are many opportunities to gain the knowledge behind how to run a large healthcare organization in this program,” said Kwan-Mangal. “In my classes I’ve been learning from people at the top of their industries – leaders who have gone through all of these professional experiences, and even though I’ve only been in the program for one year, I’ve learned so much from them.”
In addition to the two scholarship recipients, Sayuma Mamgain ’18, received the Early Career Healthcare Executive Award, given to professionals who have significantly contributed toward the advancement of healthcare management excellence.
Mamgain is a senior specialist in the quality management of performance improvement department at Lennox Hill Hospital, a position that she got based on her internship experience through Hofstra.
“I’m still in contact with a lot of my classmates and whenever I have questions they’re always open to answer or if they have questions they know they can reach out to me,” Mamgain said. “The network of people in the program has been so helpful to be able to reach out to people in different positions or healthcare settings throughout the state or even throughout the country.”
