COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS OF BLOOMSDAY
Community spirit is what makes the Bloomsday Festival so special for many Dubliners, who cherish the chance to celebrate their city’s most famous writer in the company of neighbours and visitors alike. Here’s a list of all the communities putting on a stellar line-up of events around Dublin as part of Bloomsday Villages, and other local celebrations.
Bloomsday Villages Ringsend
16th June | 11am onwards
– 2.15pm, Ringsend and Irishtown Historical Walking Tour, Grand Canal Square: Explore the rich heritage and history of these twin villages on a tour led by Cormac Lowth with some guest appearances from the likes of Leopold Bloom and Molly Bloom expected along the way! Meeting point: Red poles in Grand Canal Square
Bloomsday Villages Sandymount
16th June | 11am onwards
Enjoy an elegant start to your Bloomsday with morning coffee, croissants and a dash of gentle Joycean entertainment. €5 admission with proceeds going to the Iris Charles Centre.
Join author of Wild Dublin, Eanna Ní Lamhna for a 60 minute nature tour inspired by the Marriage of Trees from the Cyclops episode of Ulysses.
Bloomsday Villages Ballsbridge
16th June | 4.30 onwards
Bloomsday Villages Portobello
16th June | 6.30 onwards
Follow this 45-minute theatrical trail along many of its streets and locations which are mentioned in the book.
A Play On Ulysses
16th June | 6pm | Free
A Play on Ulysses is a unique Bloomsday event in Dublin. This fully dramatised adaptation of Ulysses is compressed into 75 action filled minutes. Drama, comedy, song and dance combine to produce an unforgettable and enlightening insight into James Joyce’s Ulysses. Directed by Caroline FitzGerald, stellar cast including Jack Walsh, Pat Nolan, Geraldine Plunkett, Fiana Toibin.
Free, open-air theatre at the cross in Blackrock, Co. Dublin (near Blackrock Dart) – Come early, get a seat – enjoy the Irish summer (we have a plan for adverse weather conditions, so hail, rain or shine A Play on Ulysses will go on.
Drumcondra’s Joycean Jaunt
Meet at: Lower Drumcondra
16th June | 11am | Free (booking required)
Drumcondra’s Joycean Jaunt commemorates the suburb’s linkages with James Joyce and his work.
Jaunting commences at Lower Drumcondra at 11am, then meanders to James Joyce Court/Drumcondra Library for noon, before moving to DCU’s St. Patrick’s campus for 1pm.
Joyce’s final words are reputed to be “Does nobody understand?”
We cannot guarantee that nobody will understand anything or that anybody will understand nothing, but readings will have been delivered, poems will have been recited, songs will have been sung and jollification will have been the order of the day.
Bloomsday in the Barn
12th June | 2pm | Free
The 8th Annual Bloomsday in the Barn festival, Sunday 12th June 2022 from 2pm to 4pm!
This is a free open-air community event held in the Park opposite A. C. Boles Chemist at the junction of Cork Street & South Circular Road in Dolphins Barn, Dublin 8. Includes, readings, music & song from Joyce and other Irish Writers, performed by professional actors and musicians. Food & light refreshments will be served. Prizes awarded for the best dressed in period costume.
