CONWAY, Ark. – The ULM volleyball team claimed the opening set, but Central Arkansas stormed back to win the next three sets and claim the 3-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Prince Center.
The Warhawks (1-12 overall) came out swinging, hitting .263 in the opening set, but failed to hit better than .163 in any of the remaining sets.
ULM used a 7-0 run early in the first set to take a 9-3 lead on a block by freshman Emma McWhorter and senior Ina Gosen. The Warhawks expanded the lead to as much as seven, first at 11-4 off a kill by Gosen, and again at 12-5 off a kill by junior Cali Assaley.
UCA (2-3) fought back in the set, using a 5-0 run to tie the set at 13 on a kill by Amanda Beaton. ULM responded with a 6-1 run, including four straight points capped by a service ace from senior Haley Coulter, to lead 19-14.
The Sugar Bears had one more charge, going on a 4-1 burst to tie the set at 23. However, ULM closed out the set with a kill by junior McKinley Thiede and a kill by Gosen to take a 1-0 lead, 25-23.
In the second set, UCA rolled to an early lead and cruised to the victory. The Sugar Bears scored eight straight points to claim a 13-3 advantage. The Warhawks were never closer than nine points the rest of the way as UCA took the set, 25-10, and tied the match, 1-1.
The Sugar Bears grabbed an early lead again in the third set, scoring three straight points to lead 7-4. However, ULM battled back with four straight points, capped on an attack error by UCA, to take an 8-7 lead. The Bears scored five of the next six points to go back on top, 12-9. The two sides traded points for the remainder of the set, with ULM never getting closer than two points, but never trailing by more than four points. UCA hung on to win the set, 25-18, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
UCA sprinted out of the gate again in the fourth set, scoring the first five points and seven of the first eight points to lead 7-1. The Warhawks were never closer than five points as the Sugar Bears cruised to the set victory, 25-9, and claimed the match, 3-1.
Assaley led the Warhawks with 12 kills while Gosen added 11. Thiede matched a career-high with 32 assists. Coulter narrowly missed her third double-double with nine kills and a team-best 20 digs. Madi Bowles led UCA with 15 kills.
The Warhawks return to Sun Belt Conference play at 11 a.m. Friday when they open a three-game series with UT Arlington at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
