BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The ULM track and field trio of Rebekka Schubert, Grant Girtman and Darryl Givens competed at the Samford University Multi Meet on Thursday and Friday, January 21-22. Schubert notched the best finish of the three Warhawks, placing fourth in the women’s pentathlon, while Givens and Girtman finished ninth and 13th, respectively, in the men’s heptathlon.
Schubert, competing in the sixth pentathlon in her ULM career, emerged with her best overall finish, topping her previous best mark (fifth), which came at the 2020 Sun Belt Indoor Championships. Her meet began with a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, which she completed in a time of 9.31. Schubert picked up 632 points in her second event, the high jump, after placing 10th when she cleared 1.51 meters.
Schubert then moved to the shot put, where she had a toss of 10.22 meters, earning a seventh-place finish. Her highest finish of the afternoon, second, came in the long jump, when she cleared 5.41 meters. She was bested by Arkansas State’s Camryn Newton-Smith, who won the long jump after a leap of 5.88 meters. Schubert concluded her time at Samford by crossing the line seventh in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:32.60. She missed the podium by 138 points, edged out by Kennesaw State’s Kyarra Newton, who finished in third.
Thursday and Friday marked the first heptathlon for both Girtman and Givens. The Warhawk men began the day in the 60-meter dash, where Girtman streaked down the track in 7.21 seconds to place third, while Givens crossed the line in 11th with a mark of 7.52. From there they took part in the long jump, where Givens earned 702 points with a leap of 6.52 meters. Girtman was .05 meters short of his teammate, 6.47, in ninth.
Givens had his best finish of the heptathlon, second, in the shot put after a toss of 13.00 meters. Girtman, who placed 12th in the event, managed a heave of 9.93 meters. In the fourth event, the high jump, Givens tied for fourth by clearing 1.80 meters, while Girtman finished in a four-way tie for ninth with a mark of 1.77 meters. The ULM pair finished 10th (Givens) and 15th in the 60-meter hurdles with times of 9.68 and 11.04, respectively.
In the final event of the heptathlon, the 1000-meter run, Givens posted a time of 3:07.42 to finish in 12th, while Girtman recorded a time of 3:28.35 to place 16th. Givens completed his first heptathlon in ninth with a 4,304 total points, while Girtman finished 13th and tallied 4.031 points.
ULM returns to action on January 29 when the Warhawks return to Baton Rouge to take part in the LSU Louisiana Invitational.
