Cities play a crucial role in national economic growth. In Asia and the Pacific, however, many cities fail to keep up with the growing needs of their population.
Even before COVID-19, many cities are already struggling with challenges such as inadequate basic urban and social services, especially for vulnerable population. Collecting big data from different sources, time frames, and spatial scales is the first step to better understand and describe the deficits of urban services. Then comprehensive analysis and data-driven insights could enable evidence-based decision-making to better prioritize and respond to the urban and social services.
In addition, most of wastewater is just released into the environment without proper treatment and most of cities in developing countries are exposed to waterborne diseases. The current health crisis, meanwhile, has highlighted the need to promote efficient wastewater treatment and sanitation. Sustaining and improving the provision of and access to wastewater treatment and sanitation is critical, and it is more than ever imperative to design, invest, and manage wastewater treatment and sanitation infrastructure to ensure a safe and healthy environment for urban dwellers.
The Technology Innovation Challenge (TIC) seeks to find new ways to address development challenges across ADB’s developing member countries (DMCs) through partnerships with technology providers. For this TIC, ADB invites technology providers to propose a pilot / proof-of-concept on high-level technology and innovative solutions for two urban challenges:
1. Design Inclusive Cities with Data-informed Tools
2. Promote Efficient Wastewater Treatment and Sanitation
The Technology Innovation Challenge for Urban Development aims to award maximum two grants (up to $500,000 each) that can help
- design inclusive cities with data-informed tools; or
- promote efficient wastewater treatment and sanitation.
Applicants of the TIC for Urban Development must be legally incorporated or registered in an ADB member country or territory, and must have the intellectual property right, through ownership or licenses, to use the technology solution proposed.
