CHICKASHA, Okla. – On Thursday, the No. 3 ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (46-6, 27-5 SAC) won a pair of games in the first day of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. The Drovers opened the day with a 2-0 victory against Langston University, followed by a 4-1 win against Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

 

-GAME 1-

In the opening game of the tournament, the Drovers earned a hard-fought, 2-0 victory against Langston University (13-35, 8-22 SAC). Science & Arts used a stellar pitching performance from Emily Cerny (JR/Newcastle, OK), and timely hitting to earn the win. The Drovers scored once in the bottom of the third inning, followed by an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Emily Cerny delivered a complete-game shutout in the circle, striking out six batters, and she only allowed two hits in her 31st win of the season. 

As a team, the Drovers strung together eight hits in the team’s 45th win of the season. Shyla Clouse (SO/Newcastle, OK) and Kristen Prieto (SR/Moore, OK) led Science & Arts to victory, each recording 2-hit games. Clouse finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Prieto went 2-for-3, with two runs batted in and a stolen base.  

Savannah Ashford (SR/Sulphur, OK) concluded 1-for-3 with a double, while Alyson Clemence (JR/Washington, OK) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Suni Meely (JR/Tecumseh, OK) went 1-for-2, contributing a single and a stolen base. Amanda Moreno (JR/Moore, OK) closed 1-for-3 at the dish.

 

-GAME 2-

In the second game of the day, the Drovers scored four unanswered runs to take down OPSU (19-27, 13-19 SAC). The Aggies took an early lead, with one run in the top of the third inning. However, the Drovers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  Science & Arts extended their lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning, and they scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Emily Cerny was once again sensational in the circle, tossing 7.0 innings of 1-run ball. Cerny struck out eight batters, as she improved her record to 32-5 this season. She has struck out 306 batters in 223.1 innings pitched, so far in 2021. In her career, Cerny owns a 108-15 record with a 1.13 earned run average, and she has struck out 991 batters in 757.2 innings pitched.

As a team, the Drovers combined for nine hits and three stolen bases. Shyla Clouse once again had a terrific game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored. 

Suni Meely had a very good game, going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Randa Hatter (SR/Stratford, OK) launched her team-leading, 12th homerun of the season, as she finished 1-for-3 at the plate.

Kristen Prieto concluded 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, capping a very productive day at the plate.

Savannah Ashford went 1-for-3 with a single, and Amanda Moreno went 1-for-3 with a run scored. 

  

-UP NEXT-

The Drovers will be back in action on Friday, May 7, when they close the pool-play portion of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, at Bill Smith Ballpark. Science & Arts will take on Mid-America Christian University at 2:00 PM CT. If the Drovers win, they will advance to the SAC Championship Game, which will take place at Oklahoma City University on Saturday, May 8.
