Herein, we developed a synthetic methodology using poly(hydroxyurethane) (PHU) as an organocatalyst for the chemical fixation of CO2 into epoxides, leading to the formation of five-membered cyclic carbonates (5CCs). PHUs are well-known non-isocyanate polyurethanes synthesized from 5CCs; however, we found that PHU successfully catalyzed the reaction of phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) under pressurized CO2 to yield the corresponding 5CC (PGE−5CC) with remarkably high selectivity. The catalyzed reaction was applicable to various epoxides, and the obtained 5CCs (including PGE−5CC) exhibited high yields (up to quantitative) under the optimized conditions. Because PHU catalyzes the 5CC formation process as its own precursor, the results of this work can help create a material circulation system involving 5CCs and PHUs.
