CHICKASHA, Okla. – Thursday evening, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (4-0, 0-0 SAC) remained undefeated with an exciting 89-78 victory against Southwestern Christian University (1-2, 0-0 SAC). The Drovers got off to a strong start, and they continued to play with a tremendous amount of energy for the entire 40-minute non-conference contest.
Despite trailing 6-1 in the first couple minutes of the game, the Drovers bounced back to take control, leading by as many as 14 with 11:57 left in the opening half. The Eagles closed the half on a run to only trail USAO 37-42 at the end of the first.
Following halftime, the Drovers continued to play with a high level of energy, and head coach Chris Francis made sure to keep fresh bodies on the floor. For the first time this season, Coach Francis had his full squad on the bench, allowing him some flexibility with fouls and match-ups.
The Drovers played well down the stretch, outscoring the Eagles 47-41 in the second half to close out the win.
Once again, the Drovers received incredible offensive performances from their guards. The guard-trio of Elvin Rodriguez (SR/New York, NY), Cameron Hines (SR/Ft. Cobb, OK), and Stephon Hall (JR/Oklahoma City, OK) combined for 54 of USAO’s 89 points. Rodriguez closed with 21 points on 9-for-20 shooting from the field, and he added six rebounds. Hines added 16 points, three rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Hall contributed 17 points, three rebounds, six assists, and a pair of steals in the win. Tre’veon Ellis (JR/Oklahoma City, OK) offered fantastic defensive play, and he also added six points and a trio of rebounds.
USAO’s big-men provided some great defense in the paint, holding SCU to a .352 clip (25-for-71) from the field, and the Drovers blocked eight shots. Trenton Sandifer (SR/Dallas, TX) provided stellar defense, grabbing 13 rebounds to go along with three points and three blocks. Boudacar Diakite (JR/Mali) closed with six points, eight rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Jaden Causwell (SO/Johns Creek, GA) also contributed a pair of blocks to go along with seven points and five rebounds. Gerard Makuntae (JR/Austell, GA) collected six points and five rebounds, as he provided solid minutes off the bench. Kator Ago (JR/Nigeria) chipped in seven points and two rebounds in 11 minutes of action.
The Drovers will be back on the court on Saturday, November 21, when they make the short trip to Oklahoma City to face No. 2 ranked Mid-America Christian University. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:45 PM inside Gaulke Activity Center.
