A COVID-recovery that supports immediate job creation and investment towards a zero-carbon future has been endorsed by Council.
Australia’s largest local government climate network, Cities Power Partnership (CPP), has released its “Principles for a Sustainable Economic Recovery”, which outlines a recovery that addresses long-term challenges facing the nation, empowers communities and creates a sustainable and prosperous future.
Council is one of 41 CPP local government members that have committed their support to the principles, which include driving renewable energy and storage, advocating for sustainable transport options, and the integration of circular economy principles.
Opportunities presented in the Clean Jobs Plan, which identifies 76,000 jobs that can be created over three years, including 15,000 to 20,000 in Queensland and many of these in regional areas was also noted by Council.
The Principles and Clean Jobs Plan align with a number of Council’s advocacy documents, including Cairns 2050 Shared Vision, Cairns and FNQ – Becoming the Capital of the Smart Green Economy in Australia, and COVID-19 Cairns Local Recovery Plan.
